Which Clearwater Boat Charter Is Right for You? 2-Hour vs 4-Hour vs 6-Hour

Which Clearwater Boat Charter Is Right for You? A Guide to 2, 4, and 6-Hour Trips
Trying to figure out whether a quick sandbar hop or a full-day island adventure fits your plans? The right Clearwater boat charter depends on your group, your schedule, and how much of the Gulf Coast you want to experience. Here's a straightforward breakdown of our three charter options so you can choose with confidence.
Every Salt Sand Adventures charter is a private captained pontoon experience — you get the whole boat for up to 6 guests, one flat price per boat (not per person), and your USCG-licensed captain (that's me, Captain Mark) handles all the driving. Fuel, safety gear, a cooler with ice, bottled water, and a Bluetooth sound system are all included. You just show up at 663 Bay Esplanade, Clearwater Beach, FL and we go from there.
The 2-Hour Sandbar & Swim Charter — $329
Best For: A Quick Escape or First-Timers
The 2-hour charter is our shortest trip, and it's perfect if you're short on time, visiting Clearwater Beach for a long weekend, or just want a taste of being out on the Gulf without committing to a half-day. At $329 for up to 6 guests, it works out to less than $55 per person if you split the cost — and it's the same boat you'd get on our longer trips.
What Happens on This Trip
We cruise out from the dock and head to one of the nearby shallow sandbars that pepper the Intracoastal Waterway and Gulf shallows. You'll drop anchor in waist-deep turquoise water, hop off, and swim, float, or just wade in the sand. The sandbars around Clearwater are gorgeous — soft white sand, warm Gulf water, and plenty of room to spread out.
Along the way, we'll almost always spot bottlenose dolphins. The Gulf Coast is home to a large resident dolphin population, and they're active throughout the day. Sightings are common but never guaranteed — dolphins are wild animals, after all. But I know where they like to hang out, and I'll always point them out when they surface nearby.
Who Should Book It
- Families with young kids who might not last a full afternoon
- Couples on a quick getaway
- Anyone who wants to dip their toes into the private charter experience
- Groups with other plans later in the day

The 4-Hour Island & Sandbar Adventure — $519 (Most Popular)
Best For: The Full Gulf Coast Experience in Half a Day
This is the one most guests choose, and for good reason. Four hours gives us enough time to explore multiple destinations, settle into a relaxed rhythm, and really soak up the day. At $519 for up to 6 guests, you're getting double the time of the 2-hour charter for a modest bump in price — and the extra hours open up a whole different experience.
What Happens on This Trip
A typical 4-hour adventure looks something like this:
First, we head to the sandbars. We'll anchor in a prime shallow-water spot where you can swim, float, and relax. Some guests bring beach chairs and umbrellas (those aren't included, but you're welcome to bring your own). The water is warm, the sand is soft, and there's nothing like wading in the Gulf with nothing but open water and sky around you.
Then, we cruise to the islands. Depending on weather, tides, and conditions, we might head toward Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, or other spots along the Gulf Coast. Honeymoon Island boat tours and Caladesi Island boat tours are two of the most popular destinations — both feature pristine beaches, incredible shelling, and that untouched Florida feel you can't get from a car.
Along the way, dolphin watching is almost always part of the trip. We see dolphins on most charters, and the longer you're out, the more likely we are to encounter them. Want to learn more about what to expect? Our Clearwater dolphin tours guide covers dolphin behavior, best times, and what to look for.
You can bring snacks, food, and drinks — adult beverages are fine, just no glass. We provide the cooler and ice, so load it up.
Who Should Book It
- Groups who want the best balance of value and experience
- Visitors who want to see islands AND sandbars in one trip
- Anyone celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion
- Families with older kids or teens who can handle a half day on the water
If you're weighing Honeymoon Island vs. Caladesi Island specifically, our detailed island comparison breaks down what makes each one special.
The 6-Hour Custom Island Adventure — $749
Best For: A Full Day on the Water with Maximum Flexibility
Our 6-hour charter is the ultimate Gulf Coast day. At $749 for up to 6 guests, you get a full afternoon (or morning, depending on departure time) with the freedom to build a custom itinerary. If you've got a bucket list of things you want to see — specific islands, remote sandbars, a particular stretch of coastline — this is the trip where we can chase it all.
What Happens on This Trip
Six hours means we can go further, stay longer, and visit more places. A typical 6-hour adventure might include:
- Multiple sandbar stops — we can hit a popular spot early, then move to a quieter, more secluded sandbar later
- Island hopping — Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, and other Gulf Coast gems are all in play
- Extended dolphin watching — more time on the water means more chances to spot dolphins, manatees, and other wildlife (our marine wildlife guide covers what else you might see)
- Shelling time — some of the best shelling in Florida happens on remote island beaches you can only reach by boat. Our Clearwater shelling guide has tips on what to look for
- Swimming and floating — plenty of time to actually relax in the water, not just hop in and hop out
The key word here is custom. You tell me what you're interested in, and I'll build the route based on the day's weather, tides, and conditions. Captain Mark always makes the final call on destinations and safety — but within those parameters, this is your day to design.
Who Should Book It
- Groups celebrating something special who want to go all out
- Boating enthusiasts who want a full day on the Gulf
- Visitors who want maximum island-hopping and wildlife time
- Anyone who's done shorter charters before and wants more
Every charter returns to the dock by 8:00 PM, and we run daily from 8 AM to 8 PM ET. If you're planning a sunset finale, our Clearwater sunset cruises guide has more on what makes Gulf Coast sunsets so spectacular — and a 6-hour trip timed right can end with one.
